MOZART’S REQUIEM

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is arguably one of the greatest prodigies of all time.  His Requiem is a profound confrontation with mortality that transcends grief. It is a towering, emotionally charged masterpiece defined as much by its haunting beauty as by the mystery of its unfinished state. Written in 1791 on a secret commission and famously left incomplete upon the composer’s death, critics universally revere its striking contrasts, thrilling polyphony, and profound dramatic weight.  Introducing the Aiken Philharmonic Festival Chorus under the direction of chorusmaster Dr. Maureen Simpson, voices across the Aiken area will join together for the Requiem in a true display of community.

Il Tramonto was composed by Ottorino Respighi in 1918.  Featuring strings of Aiken Philharmonic and mezzo-soprano Dr. Keely Rhodes, Il Tramonto (Italian for sunset) is based on a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley--a gothic romantic story of two lovers who lay together at sunset, but by dawn, the man has died.
